Elizabeth Bennet goes to Netherfield Park to keep her sick sister, Jane, company. Things turn odd as soon as she arrives. She sees a ghostly face in an upstairs window of the manor, and hears eerie sounds. Then, when things start turning up missing, and she meets a dark stranger in the middle of the night, she finds herself embroiled in danger and scandal, and the only one she can turn to for help is the stiff Mr. Darcy, who at first seems to dislike her, or at least, to hold her in disdain. The Netherfield Affair by Penelope Swan is a Regency mystery written in the style of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The author does a fantastic job of recreating the style of Austen’s works, with a touch of mystery, complete with hidden clues and red herrings. Jane Austen fans will love this book, and even if you’re not particularly fond of this style of writing, I’m sure you’ll find this an entertaining story. This is the first book in a planned four-book series that explores the relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy.
I’ll be looking for the next one to see if the mysterious highwayman is found, and just what his story really is. That’s a bit of a spoiler, but only a bit. The ending will still surprise you.

The Netherfield Affair ~ A Pride and Prejudice Variation Dark Darcy Mysteries Book 1 edition by Penelope Swan Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
This was a mystery set with our main characters, all acting in character and very much set for the beginning of Pride and Prejudice. Bingley and Jane are attracted to each other, she goes on the infamous visit engineered by her mother, gets sick and Elizabeth visits. The variation begins at this point. Talk of ghosts, highwaymen in the pattern of Robin Hood, the mysterious disappearance of valuable items from the inhabitants and both Darcy and Elizabeth are in pursuit of what they feel is not quite right in the Bingley household.
A light story, not very long, very well told. Enjoyable and entertaining.
I thought it was a nice change with the mystery aspect of Jane Austen's characters. It was a delightful read and I thought the part of the flowers in the plot were a good addition.
The kindness of Darcy shows through of what he does in the end of the story with the maid and how he helps her. It seems like Darcy perceived what was going on all along in the plot. It also showed the Lizzy has foresight into the goings on also as told in the story.
Look forward to the next in the series.
this was good , except for the fact that the author used Austen`s book almost verbatim , Swan takes a scene from Pride and Prejudice and makes a whole new novel out of , which in itself is genius but made me feel resentful because I felt that Swan had cheated , however I guess if you are writing variations on a classic then there really isn't a whole lot that you could do with the dialog . Just change the plot a little and keep the characters the same add some suspense and poof you have a new novel . I do feel that the Jane Austen " variations " are getting out of control. do any of these new authors have anything original?
This was different from other JAFF I've read because it was more mystery than romance. I'd say on a romance scale of 1 - 10 it was about a 1. The story focused on the mystery. Since it is in 4 parts I expect that the romance element won't really resolve until the end. It wasn't hard to figure out one of the mysteries but the other was a surprise to me. I mean could there really be ghosts at Netherfield? Somehow writing that sentence makes me want to add, "If it weren't for you meddlesome kids...
I have bought the first two books in this series, and I will be reading the second with (mostly, I hope) enjoyment. And while this is true, I do have to say that I found this version of Elizabeth Bennett to be, in some areas of judgement to be greatly lacking in sense.
In P&P, it was obvious that Lizzy could be taken in by by a pretty face and manners, she knew no wrong of Wickham; she thought him the injured party...true, she wanted him to be the injured party because she did not want to believe that there could be any good in Mr Darcy. We all know and love the story, though Elizabeth's holier than thou attitude was a source of minor irritation for me.
In this book however, Lizzy is beyond foolish because she knows that the pretty face and pleasing manner are the outer trappings of a criminal. And still, she is attracted to him! She is also foolishly independent in this and refuses to talk to Mr Darcy when she is given the opportunity to do so.
The second Miss Bennett is an even worse judge of character than she is in P&P.
The book was an easy read and well written.
It's a Jane Austen fan fic, so the characters have already been developed. I really enjoyed it, and as far as fan fics go, it was well written. The problem I had with it is that it didn't cover enough of the story. It was one little piece of the Pride and Prejudice AU . . . leading up to but not including the Netherfield ball.At 2.99 an installment, the author could make a tidy little profit. I would rather pay a little more upfront, and have the full parallel story to cover the same time period as Pride and Prejudice.
3.5 stars rounded up to 4 stars. This story ends in the kindle version at 92% and then gives us a preview of the next in the series.
As we are told in the story description one mystery seems to be solved...but not really. We learn who is responsible for stealing items at Netherfield. However, the master of the crime gets away while his accomplice is shown mercy. I am sure, I am positive that Highwayman George will show up again in the other mysteries.
The relationship between Elizabeth and Darcy is warm at times and cooler at other moments. He is a mystery to Elizabeth, in that he doesn't share his thoughts on the crime or the criminals so when certain actions of his are disclosed she is surprised and mystified as to why he didn't clarify things to her.
This story may be read as a stand alone but I would like to read...the rest of the story. After all we didn't get our share of romance in this tale.
